If you go to Karori Cemetry in Wellington you might stumble across the life size bronze statue of Mrs Chippy on the grave of Harry “Chippy” McNish. Mrs Chippy travelled with McNish (the ship’s carpenter) to Antarctica as a ship’s cat on board Shackleton’s Endurance in 1914.
After the Endurance became trapped in pack ice Shackleton had Mrs Chippy and some of the dogs killed.
